Sam Morsy’s Wigan Athletic relegate to League One following draw against Fulham

Sam Morsy’s Wigan Athletic have failed to achieve the heroic accomplishment of surviving relegation in the English Championship after drawing against Fulham in the league’s final round.

Wigan had been hit with a tough announcement as the club fell to administration after struggling financially due to the coronavirus outbreak, which meant that they were enforced a 12-point match ban at the end of the season.

Wigan were on the right track for a while as they haven’t lost any of their games since the decision and were 13 points away from the relegation zone with just two games left, but the decision represented a huge below for the Latics.

Wigan were 13th in the league table before the final game of the season but the 13 points deduction.

Kieffer Moore opened the scoring for Wigan in the 32nd minute to put them in front and give them a glimpse of hope, but his goal was cancelled out by Neeskens Kebano who equalised four minutes into the second half.

Morsy was also in action for the hosts but he was shown a yellow card in opening 20 minutes of the encounter.

After deducting the points, the result meant that Wigan ended the 2019-20 campaign with 47 points dropping to the 23rd place in the standings, which means that they are set for League One action next term.
