Ittihad of Alexandria president Mohamed Moselhy has revealed his stance from the possibility of cancelling the Egyptian Premier League.

The Egyptian Premier League has been halted since March with the number of COVID-19 reaching more than 30,000 cases in Egypt.

However, the Minister of Youth and Sports had announced that the league could resume in mid-June.

Despite the announcement, many clubs in the league had revealed their wish to cancel the league and not play their remaining games.

Ittihad’s president Mohamed Moselhy talked about the current situation and says he does not mind the idea of cancelling the league and crowning Al Ahly champions of the 2019/20 season.

“The league has been put on hold for nearly three months now and it was reported that we would resume training this month, but we haven’t received any official notice yet,” Moselhy told local radio broadcast.

“We all hope that the league would resume if the authorities take the necessary precautionary measures.

“I’m always hearing ‘Why can’t the Egyptian league return like the German Bundesliga? What is the difference between Egyptian and European leagues?’

“But from this standpoint, the French prime minister had cancelled their league and crowned Paris Saint-Germain champions while the bottom two were relegated.

“Al Ahly are far ahead of Arab Contractors, who are their closest competitors in the league. You could say that there’s still a long way to go but everyone knows Al Ahly will win in the end.

“We don’t mind cancelling the league but it would affect other teams who are fighting for the top three spots and others who are trying to get out of the relegation zone.

“There are 14 clubs that sent official letters demanding the cancellation of the league and agreeing on crowning Al Ahly champions, and Zamalek president Mortada Mansour was on board with this at first,” he added.

Ittihad are currently fifth in the Egyptian Premier League table with 27 points after 17 games played.
