Zamalek are the champions of the 2020 Egyptian Super Cup after beating rivals Al Ahly in a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw in normal time.

Al Ahly XI: Mohamed El Shennawy; Mohamed Hany, Rami Rabiaa, Yasser Ibrahim, Ali Maaloul; Aliou Dieng, Amr El-Sulaya, Afsha, Hussein El Shahat, Geraldo; Ajayi.

Zamalek XI: Mohamed Abu Gabal; Hazem Emam, Mahmoud Alaa, El-Wensh, AbdelShafy; Tarek Hamed, Ferjani Sassi, Youssef Obama, Ahmed Sayed Zizo, Achraf Bencharki; Mostafa Mohamed.

While Al Ahly have been a force to be reckoned with in the Egyptian Premier League this season, Zamalek go into the game with a huge confidence boost having just beaten Esperance de Tunis in the CAF Super Cup.

Al Ahly struggled to replicate their normal fluid style during the game, despite creating more chances than their opponents. After a cagey 90 minutes, the match was set to be decided by a penalty shootout.

The first five penalty kicks were taken with perfection, however the shootout started to swing when Achraf Bencharki missed to make it 3-2 to Al Ahly.

Immediately after, Mohamed Hany failed to capitalise on the advantage they were given and suddenly they were all square.

While it was the fifth spot kick, it had effectively become sudden death and Al Ahly’s Senegalese forward Aliou Badji fluffed his lines which set up a winning spot kick for Abdallah Gomaa, which was converted.

After the game, a fight broke out which was sparked when Kahraba reacted angrily to Shikabala and Abdallah Gomaa’s celebrations. Kahraba was sent off for his reaction and will miss Al Ahly’s next league game.

The result means that Zamalek have won the Egyptian Super Cup for the 4th time, reclaiming the title from Al Ahly who have won it 11 times.

Both sides will now turn their attention to their next game which is against each other in the Egyptian Premier League on Monday 24th of February at 7:30PM local time.
