While he seemed that he would have been a key component in any success that the Baggies would have this year, his progress has been halted by a lengthy injury that kept him out from the summer until the new year.

As he has now started playing first-team football again, former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips believes that the Egyptian is still not up to speed.

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips said: “You saw with Hegazi with the mistake [vs Stoke City] it might take two or three games to get back up to match fitness and at this stage of the season, can you really afford to do that?

“That centre-half position, I thought it was nailed on for Ajayi and Bartley for the rest of the season but anything can happen,” he added.

Despite the rustiness, the former Al Ahly defender can be happy with keeping a clean sheet against Premier League opposition even if it was an out of form West Ham side.

West Bromwich Albion continue their Championship title campaign in their next game on Tuesday 28th of January away at Cardiff City at 9:45 PM Egyptian time.
