Following the final qualifying round, where the Egyptian Mohamed Safwat won over Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy, the Egyptian faced Gregoire Barrere in the first round of the tournament that took place on Monday.
Safwat’s journey in the Australian Open started when he beat India’s Sumit Nagal in the first round in two sets, 7-6 and 6-2.
He then went on to face France’s Alexandre Muller in the second round and ended up beating him in what was a close game which ended 7-5, 7-5.
In the final qualifying round, he beat Russian national Evgeny Donkey 7-5 and 6-4, meaning he reached the tournament’s main draw for the first time in his career.
The 29-year-old started the match on the right foot, clinching the first set 7-6 after going to tiebreak. The Egyptian, however, couldn’t hold on and lost three successive sets with 7-6, 6-4 and 7-6 to exit the tournament.
The loss does not take from Safwat that he is the first Egyptian to reach the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 in tennis after winning the African games, as well as becoming the first Egyptian tennis player to qualify to first round of the Australian Open since 1978 after Ismail El-Shafei.
