Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - Tottenham Hostpur's push for a top-four finish in the Premier League received a setback on Wednesday as Danny Ings handed Southampton a 1-0 win even as Harry Kane limped off with a hamstring injury.

Ings clinched the game by lifting the ball over Toby Alderweireld before firing home his ninth goal in as many league starts to lift the Saints up to 12th, six points clear of the danger zone.

Jose Mourinho's team slipped six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. To make matters worse, Kane injured himself as he converted Christian Eriksen's free-kick, but was flagged offside before hobbling off the ground.

Ings' goals have taken Southampton out of the bottom three in recent weeks and Spurs were unable to cope with his threat.

Inside the first five minutes, Ings saw a shot blocked inside the area before Cedric Soares headed wastefully wide from Ryan Bertrand's cross.

Jack Stephens' long ball caught the Tottenham back line square and Ings flicked the ball over Alderweireld before netting his 15th goal of the season past Paulo Gazzaniga.

Spurs have now gone a calendar year without a clean sheet away from home in the league.

Meanwhile, Leicester kept alive their hopes of catching leaders Liverpool as Ayoze Perez returned to haunt Newcastle in their 3-0 win at St James' Park.

Spanish forward Perez put Leicester ahead nine minutes before the break with his fifth goal since swapping Newcastle for the King Power Stadium.

James Maddison doubled Leicester's lead shortly afterwards and Hamza Choudhury bagged the late third as Brendan Rodgers' side made a flying start to 2020.

It was Leicester's seventh away league win this season.

Also, ten-man Watford continued their fine run under new manager Nigel Pearson and boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation with a 2-1 home win over Wolves.

Gerard Delofeu and Abdoulaye Doucoure fired Watford ahead before Pedro Neto pulled one back for Wolves, who failed to capitalise on a numerical advantage in the last 20 minutes after defender Christian Kabasele was sent off.

Deulofeu opened the scoring with a neat 30th-minute finish when he beat goalkeeper Rui Patricio with a low shot into the far corner.

Doucoure made it 2-0 in the 49th when he cut inside from the left and found the top corner with a firm drive which clipped Wolves defender Conor Coady and left Patricio stranded.

Neto reduced the arrears on the hour with a heavily deflected effort which sailed over Ben Foster. But Watford held on to celebrate their third league win with one draw under Pearson.
