The “Daily Pakistan” newspaper reported that the Pakistani police had requested the Iranian authorities’ help in apprehending the suspects in the murder of a Saudi diplomat, who are believed to be currently hiding in Iran.

According to a Pakistani counter-terrorism official, diplomat Hassan al-Qahtani, an employee of the Saudi consulate in Karachi, was killed in 2011 when gunmen opened fire on his car and shot him.

A special crime investigation team

In November last year, the Pakistani authorities set up a special team to investigate the murder after previous investigations had not yielded any result.

Pakistan’s Deputy Inspector General of the Counter-Terrorism Department, Omar Shahid Hamid, explained that the team was working on “productive leads” from the intelligence.

The investigation material includes a request in November to Iranian authorities to assist in the case against three suspects in the Qahtani killing, Ali Mustahsen, Reza Imam, and Syed Waqar Ahmad, regarding their “involvement in targeted killings and terrorist activities in Pakistan.”

An official in the Counter-Terrorism Department said, “We have written a request for mutual legal assistance from Iran.. We believe that the three defendants are hiding in Iran, and we cannot arrest them without the assistance of their law enforcement authorities,” noting that “red notices for Mustahsan and Ahmed have already been issued, Meanwhile, police called on the FBI to initiate a single issuance process for Imam as well.
