The spokesperson for the National Security Authority in the Iranian parliament, Mahmoud Abbaszadeh Meshkini, announced today, Wednesday, Iran’s readiness to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

The Iranian spokesman said that “Tehran has no problem in calming tensions with its neighbors, including Riyadh,” adding that “the previous actions of Saudi Arabia against Iran, along with some of the current positions and policies, are slowing down the negotiation process.”

He added, “If Saudi Arabia wants to solve its problem with Yemen, and if the Yemeni side agrees, we are ready to mediate between the two sides.”

Security officials in Iran and Saudi Arabia have held several rounds of talks so far, with the aim of resolving tensions between the two countries, and IRNA indicated that “no information or official statement about the outcome of the talks has been disclosed, but some officials expect it to be positive and constructive.”

Zadeh Meshkini explained that “Iran has given priority to neighboring countries and the region in the 13th government, along with some of the current positions and policies, which will slow down the negotiation process.”

He stressed that “Iran has sincerely taken the initiative to improve relations and pursue the interests of the countries in the region, but only if the other side genuinely interacts.”

Zadeh Meshkini said that “establishing good relations and a regional power bloc with the presence of Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey will benefit everyone.”

The positions of the official spokesman for the National Security Authority in the Iranian parliament came after the conclusion of the “security dialogue” session between Saudi Arabia and Iran in Amman on December 13, 2020, which was hosted by the Arab Institute for Security Studies in Amman.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh, said in late September that “there is progress in serious talks with Saudi Arabia, especially on Gulf security,” stressing that “these talks never stopped, and after my prime minister’s government assumed its duties, it was completed. Exchange messages at the appropriate level.”

It is noteworthy that Iranian-Saudi relations are witnessing a recent development, represented by a number of Iranian-Saudi meetings. Iran has also resumed its exports to Saudi Arabia, and considered that this step is the result of talks with Riyadh via Iraq.
