Atlanta, USA (CNN) – The Iranian ambassador to the Houthis in Yemen, Hassan Erlo, died on Tuesday, as a result of complications from infection with the Corona virus, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, according to the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).

The Houthi spokesman, Muhammad Abd al-Salam, said in a tweet on his Twitter page that the ambassador was transferred to Iran from Sanaa via an Iraqi plane in agreement with Saudi Arabia, without clarifying the date of his transfer to his country.

The Iranian ambassador had contracted coronavirus in Yemen and died in Iran after arriving “in an unsuitable situation due to a delay in the cooperation required by some countries in the region,” according to the Iranian agency, without specifying the names of the intended countries.

And the American newspaper “Washington Post” had published a report in which it said that the Houthis had asked Saudi Arabia to allow an Iranian diplomat to travel to Iran urgently, quoting what it described as “Western and Middle Eastern officials.” The Saudi government and the Houthis for comment on the newspaper’s report.

In an interview with IRNA, the Houthi ambassador to Iran downplayed the importance of Saudi Arabia’s role in transferring the Iranian ambassador to his country, crediting this to the Iraqi authorities, who requested permission to land and take off from Sanaa airport, and thanked Oman for coordinating the operation despite what he described as “Saudi Arabia’s stubbornness.”
