Beirut: The Lebanese Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Hajj Hassan, said on Friday that there is a possibility that Prime Minister Najib Mikati will visit Saudi Arabia soon, in a move that may constitute a solution to the diplomatic crisis between Beirut and Riyadh.
Hajj Hassan’s words came in a television interview a week after a tripartite call took place between Mikati, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and French President Emmanuel Macron during the latter’s visit to Saudi Arabia.
The call came one day after the resignation of the Lebanese Minister of Information, George Kordahi, against the background of his statements last August, and before his appointment as a minister, and were published in October about the Yemen war, which caused a diplomatic crisis between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.
As a result, on October 29, Riyadh withdrew its ambassador in Beirut and asked the Lebanese ambassador to leave, and this was later done by the Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait and Yemen.
“After Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt (Thursday), it is likely that he will make a close visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Hajj Hassan said.
Hajj Hassan stressed “the importance of restoring relations with Arab countries,” noting that “Minister Qardahi’s resignation came at the time he saw fit, and he is a patriot.”
A day before Macron’s visit to Saudi Arabia on November 4 last, Qardahi submitted his resignation from the government, and said that he understood from Mikati that the French wish to submit his resignation in order to help open a dialogue with Saudi officials on Lebanon.
The diplomatic crisis with Saudi Arabia worsened the economic situation in Lebanon, which is suffering the worst economic crisis in its history, as Riyadh decided to stop all Lebanese agricultural and industrial imports into it.
