Al-Jubeir to Germany: Saudi Arabia does not need your weapons

Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Adel Al-Jubeir, described the ban on arms exports to his country by Germany as a “mistake”, saying that his country “does not need German military equipment.”

“The idea of stopping the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia because of the Yemen war I think is illogical,” Al-Jubeir said, in an interview with “DPA” agency, “We believe that this is a mistake because we consider the war in Yemen to be a legitimate war.” It is a war we have been forced to fight. ”

Al-Jubeir emphasized that his country is already buying weapons from other countries, noting in this context that the German embargo “does not make a difference” to the Kingdom, and said: “We do not need German weapons to manage our army.”

On November 19, 2018, the German Ministry of Economy announced that the country’s government decided to implement the embargo on the supply of weapons to countries participating in the Yemen war, which was previously adopted without starting its practical implementation against Saudi Arabia.

Berlin has completely stopped the application of all licenses that have been submitted to companies and institutions to supply German weapons to Saudi Arabia, and has also taken a decision not to grant any new licenses in this field.

This decision came against the background of the killing of the Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, known for his criticism of the Saudi leadership, especially the Crown Prince, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, on October 2, 2018, in his country’s consulate in Istanbul by a special Saudi assassination squad.

The German arms embargo on Saudi Arabia, which has previously been extended several times, will be up for discussion again in the coming weeks, before it expires on December 31.
