The Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen signed in Riyadh yesterday, a memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to support the agricultural sector in Yemen, according to a program statement.
The statement said that the Saudi Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al-Fadhli, met with the Yemeni Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Othman Majali, in Riyadh, in the presence of the General Supervisor of the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, Ambassador Muhammad bin Saeed Al Jaber, and the Yemeni ambassador to the Kingdom, Dr. Sha’i Mohsen Al-Zindani. , “To discuss aspects of partnership and means of cooperation between the two ministries through the program to follow up the outcomes of the meeting in terms of development initiatives and programs, and to govern them in accordance with international best practices, with the aim of supporting the productive and vital sectors in Yemen.”
The meeting concluded with the signing of a joint memorandum of cooperation between the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen to contribute to “achieving environmental, living and economic balance in Yemen, and building specialized capabilities in the environmental, agricultural and vital fields, in a way that improves the lives of the people of the various governorates.”
Ambassador Al Jaber said during the meeting that “the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen is working with the Yemeni Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in Yemen with the aim of transferring knowledge, building capabilities and supporting agriculture … The brotherly Yemeni people depend heavily on agriculture, and we believe that supporting agriculture will pave many job opportunities. There are many aspects of cooperation that have been discussed in the sectors of agriculture and fisheries, and the work will be effective and fruitful.
Among the topics discussed in the meeting, according to the statement, “ways of cooperation in the sectors of agriculture, water, fisheries and the environmental field, which include cooperation in combating desert locusts in Yemen, and how to develop solutions to the crises facing the productive and vital sectors, and work to enhance Yemeni agricultural exports.” Plans to support Yemeni agriculture with seeds and agricultural inputs that contribute to raising the efficiency and quality of local production were discussed.
The joint cooperation memorandum will contribute to implementing development strategies that promote optimal investment of water and food resources, and building the capacities of environment, water, agriculture and fisheries cadres. It will also improve the efficiency and quality of the environmental systems in Yemen, contribute to the development of food production, ensure availability and sustainable management of water, and contribute to the development of Yemen’s natural resources.
This partnership is an extension of the development efforts made by the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen to improve the infrastructure of more than 7 vital sectors in cooperation with the Yemeni government and local authorities in the governorates, including work to support the agricultural sector by supplying equipment, plows and greenhouses, cultivating agricultural lands, and supporting resource management. Hydropower, through several projects that include drilling wells and providing them with solar powered pumps, distributing water tanks, and supporting fishermen with fishing boats that operate with modern engines.
