A new decision in Saudi Arabia threatens to expel thousands of...

Today, Monday, the Saudi authorities announced a new decision that would tighten the screws on thousands of expatriates and expel them from the Kingdom.

The Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, Ahmed Al-Rajhi, said that the ministry decided to limit work in communications and information technology professions in the private sector to its citizens only, and to prevent expatriates from employing them.

The Saudi minister added, in a tweet via Twitter, that this decision “will provide more job opportunities for Saudis and Saudi women.”

The decision applies to all establishments in the labor market that employ 5 or more workers in communications and information technology engineering jobs, application development, programming and analysis, technical support and telecommunications technical jobs.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said that the decision aims to provide 9,000 job opportunities in the sector, with the calculated wage being determined so that it starts from 7,000 riyals ($ 1,860) for specialized occupations, and 5,000 riyals ($ 1,330) for technical professions.

For its part, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology confirmed that the decision to localize professions in the communications and information technology sector is in the interest of the labor market and national cadres, and comes as one of the ministry’s initiatives within the objectives of the National Transformation Program 2020 in pursuit of the Saudi Vision 2030.

The decision also comes in light of the digital transformation that Saudi Arabia is witnessing in all sectors. The decision will help create an attractive and stimulating environment for the development of national cadres and the growth of the communications and information technology sector.

The decision came nearly two years after a gradual plan to localize the jobs of the communications and information technology sector related to computers and networks, engineering and programming, and about half of its jobs are occupied by expatriates, according to official figures issued at the end of 2018.

The Kingdom announced the implementation of an integrated plan for the “Saudization of jobs” and began to implement it recently in several fields such as telecommunications, dentistry and other jobs that ultimately lead to the expulsion of residents in the interest of providing job opportunities for citizens.

Within Vision 2030, the Kingdom aims to reduce the unemployment rate to 7%, and it also plans to reduce it to 9% during 2020, through the economic reform program, which aims to provide 450,000 jobs for Saudis and replace 1.2 million jobs for citizens by 2020, according to Nouf Al-Ghamdi, the economic development advisor in Saudi Arabia.
