In a move to boost livestock and food in the country, the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding and the Agricultural Development Fund, with the aim of supporting livestock keepers to shift from traditional to modern model breeding, raising the production efficiency of the livestock sector, enhancing local production of red meat, and improving income. Breeders through vocational education according to the programs of the national plan to improve the productivity of the livestock sector in the Kingdom

And signed, in the presence of the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Abdul Rahman Al-Fadhli, by the Undersecretary for Livestock Dr. Hamad Al-Batshan, and the Director General of the Fund, Munir bin Fahd Al-Sahli.

Al-Batshan explained that the signing of the memorandum is part of the ministry’s objectives to develop and sustain the livestock sector and support responsible investment, indicating that the ministry’s agency for livestock aims to transform the livestock sector from traditional breeding systems to modern breeding systems and raise productivity in order to preserve the available natural resources and optimize their utilization. Modern technologies in production and reducing production costs, which contribute to enhancing the income of livestock keepers, to enhance food security, and this comes within the national plan to improve the productivity of the livestock sector in the Kingdom, and it is one of the sustainable agricultural rural development programs that are concerned with developing the small livestock sector.

For his part, Director of the Fund Munir Al-Sahli stated that the memorandum aims to facilitate lending to livestock keepers, raise local production of red meat and products of animal origin, improve breeders’ income through the application of modern breeding systems, and contribute to financing the program that supports sustainable agricultural rural development programs, and includes Citizens qualified to work in the field of raising sheep (sheep or goats), in all regions of the Kingdom, taking into account the relative distinction of the regions.

Al-Sahli stressed that the fund would continue financing the agricultural sector in its various fields, and supporting services, and enhancing its role in contributing to achieving food security.

It is noteworthy that the Memorandum of Understanding includes working on developing a mechanism to be eligible for funding, qualifying applicants to apply for funding and granting them the necessary licenses, in addition to preparing and establishing a comprehensive database and programs, through which all operations, statistical and production data, tracking and electronic linking are implemented.
