Paris Mayor Apologizes for Participating in “U-20” Summit in Support of...

Paris City Council announced today, Wednesday, that Mayor Anne Hidalgo will not participate in the “Urban 20” “U20” summit of mayors of major cities in the “Group of Twenty” scheduled for next Wednesday.

In a statement, the council indicated that “Hidalgo announced the matter and that the reason for her refusal to participate came in support of the Saudi activist Loujain Al-Hathloul, imprisoned in the Kingdom.”

The Council stressed, “This decision will not affect France’s membership in the G20.”

For his part, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his withdrawal from a summit in Saudi Arabia due to concerns related to human rights violations, amid calls to boycott the event that coincides with the anniversary of the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The “U20” summit, which will last for three days, is being organized as part of the G20 summit, which will be held in Saudi Arabia on November 21-22.

The U20 conference will host mayors of major global cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, Rome and Madrid.

Ann Hidalgo and de Blasio’s announcement comes after a group of international organizations, in a joint letter last week, appealed to the mayors of nine global cities, including New York, to boycott the conference.
