The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stressed, on Wednesday, the need for the international community to take a firm stand towards Iran, and to deal seriously with its violations related to its nuclear program.

The Saudi Cabinet said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency, “SPA”, that the Kingdom renewed during the general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency its demands that the international community take a firm stance towards Iran and seriously deal with its violations related to its nuclear program.

The council continued, “This is in addition to the Kingdom’s support for positive initiatives calling for the creation of geographical areas free of nuclear weapons, and work with the international community to make the Middle East a zone free of these weapons.”

Earlier, the United States announced the activation of the “trigger mechanism” by which all international sanctions imposed on Iran would be restored, based on the UN Security Council resolutions.

The sanctions cover a variety of fields, the most severe of which is stipulated in Resolution No. (1929), and it relates to imposing sanctions on Tehran’s nuclear, missile, banking, shipping, and trade activities.

Radio Farda, a Persian speaking from the Czech Republic, said that this process had begun due to Washington’s concern that the arms embargo imposed on Iran under Security Council Resolution No. 2231 was approaching, on October 18, 2020.

America resorted to activating the “trigger mechanism” against Iran after the former failed to convince members of the Security Council of the decision to extend the sanctions imposed on the purchase and export of weapons for Iran more than a decade ago.

Peter Weizmann, a weapons analyst at the Stockholm Peace Research Institute, noted that it is important for the United States to know what modern and advanced equipment Iran could access if the arms embargo ends.

The “snapback” or (trigger mechanism) is a mechanism mentioned in Security Council Resolution 2231, by which the severe economic sanctions imposed on Iran are lifted.

The decision was issued following the conclusion of the nuclear agreement between the major powers and Iran in 2015.

This mechanism allows any of the permanent members of the Security Council that signed the nuclear deal to resort to it to re-impose sanctions in the event that Tehran violates the stipulated commitments.
