RIYADH — More than 50 members of the Saudi National Committee of Workers Committees and the national labor committees took part in a two-day training workshop on the rights, responsibilities and legal frameworks for combating human trafficking.

The workshop was organized by the Saudi Human Rights Commission’s National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and was part of the SNCWC’s mandate to safeguard labor rights in the Kingdom.

Opening the event, Nasser Al-Jaryad, chairman of the SNCWC and chair of this year’s Labor20, one of the G20’s engagement groups, highlighted the importance of the SNCWC in combating human trafficking. “It is the committee’s mission to promote human rights in general and workers’ rights in particular. We take this mission very seriously and we take the fight against trafficking very seriously,” he said.

The training sessions featured a wide array of experts, including the IOM’s Mohammed Zarkani, Wria Rashid, and Rayan Daibes; the HRC’s Dr. Abdurahman Al-Otaibi; and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime’s Dr. Muhanad al-Duwaikat.

Speaking during the workshop, Mohammed Zarkani, head of the IOM’s mission in Bahrain, said: “The IOM will spare no effort in continuing to support the Saudi anti-trafficking committee in carrying out its tasks successfully. We are glad to be a key partner in the Kingdom’s effort and we hope to build on recent momentum for the coming years.”

According to Sarah Al Tamimi, vice-chair of the NCCHT: “The SNCWC has an important role to play here. Their access and insights are invaluable to the protection of workers and the fight against trafficking at large. We look forward to building on this fruitful partnership.”
