Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - WASHINGTON — US Vice President JD Vance said he has not decided whether to run for president in 2028, acknowledging that he could ultimately stay out of the race despite being widely viewed as a leading contender to succeed President Donald Trump.
Asked during a CBS News town hall in Michigan whether there was a possibility he would not seek the presidency, Vance replied: "Of course there's a chance."
The hour-long interview with CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil was released Saturday night.
Vance described himself as a procrastinator when it comes to major life decisions and said he would need time to consider the personal and family implications of a presidential campaign.
He pointed to his four young children and his wife, Usha Vance, who he said "has never loved politics" but "loves public service."
"I have to think about it," Vance said, leaving his political plans unresolved.
His remarks come despite Trump's public endorsement of Vance as his "most likely" Republican successor, placing the vice president among the most prominent potential candidates for the party's 2028 presidential nomination.
During the town hall, Vance also defended the Trump administration's economic policies, accusing former President Joe Biden's administration of neglecting American manufacturing.
He acknowledged, however, that reversing the decline of the country's manufacturing sector would take time.
Turning to the conflict with Iran and its impact on energy prices, Vance recognized growing concerns over rising fuel costs.
"I recognize that gas prices are too high right now," he said.
"When this conflict is over, we are going to see gas prices come down," he added.
Vance defended Trump's handling of the conflict, arguing that the United States had "in some ways ... won decisively," while acknowledging that Iran's actions would influence the outcome.
"The enemy gets a vote here," he said.
He stressed that Washington was seeking a "final firm commitment from the Iranians that they're not going to rebuild their nuclear program."
The vice president also rejected allegations of corruption involving Trump, saying he had not seen "a single shred of evidence that (Trump) participates or sanctions in that corruption."
