Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin told US President Donald Trump that Ukraine's alleged attempts to disrupt Russia's parliamentary elections had undermined prospects for an immediate resumption of trilateral peace negotiations, Russian state news agency Tass reported Saturday.
Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said Putin raised the issue during a 90-minute telephone conversation with Trump on Friday, accusing Kyiv of launching widespread drone attacks targeting Moscow, other Russian cities and polling stations.
"By attempting to disrupt our elections — launching a massive drone strike on Moscow, other cities, polling stations, and specific individuals involved in organizing the vote on the main election day — the Kyiv regime has essentially scuttled the possibility of an immediate resumption of the negotiation process," Ushakov said, quoting Putin.
"Now, as the president said, we will consider when these negotiations might be resumed," he added.
The Russian allegations could not be independently verified.
According to Ushakov, Trump listened to Putin's position and indicated that he would instruct US officials to convey the message to a Ukrainian delegation currently in Miami for talks with American representatives.
Putin also reaffirmed that Moscow's military objectives in Ukraine remained unchanged, while claiming Russian forces continued to advance and retain the initiative on the battlefield.
"Putin has made it clear that our position regarding the goals and objectives of the special military operation remains unchanged, as does our readiness for a political-diplomatic settlement aimed at securely achieving a long-term, sustainable peace," Ushakov said.
The Kremlin uses the term "special military operation" to describe Russia's war in Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said discussions on Ukraine accounted for most of the conversation, adding that Putin had received certain US proposals aimed at de-escalating the conflict "with understanding."
Putin urges diplomatic solution to Iran conflict
The two leaders also discussed the ongoing US-Iran conflict, with Putin urging Washington to pursue a diplomatic agreement with Tehran.
Ushakov described the conversation as "friendly" and said Putin emphasized that diplomatic opportunities remained available despite the continuing conflict.
"Putin particularly emphasized that the potential for diplomacy regarding Iran is far from exhausted: it is both possible and necessary to reach agreements with Tehran," Ushakov said.
He added that Moscow's proposal to transfer highly enriched Iranian uranium to Russian territory remained on the table as a possible way to break the diplomatic deadlock.
According to Ushakov, Trump welcomed Russia's involvement in efforts to resolve the crisis.
Peskov separately said Putin had conveyed Iran's position on a potential settlement to Trump following consultations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Putin held two meetings with Pezeshkian on the sidelines of a Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) leaders' summit in Turkmenistan, during which he informed the Iranian president of his planned conversation with Trump.
"Subsequently, in coordination with the Iranian president, Putin conveyed the Iranian side's vision regarding a possible resolution to the conflict to Trump," Peskov said.
Trump announces Russian diesel supply agreement
The diplomatic discussions also covered global energy markets, with Trump announcing an agreement for Russia to increase diesel supplies to the United States and international markets.
Describing the conversation as a "highly successful discussion," Trump said on Truth Social that Russia had agreed to immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel fuel.
He said another 500,000 tons would be delivered in November, followed by 1 million tons shortly afterward.
Trump added that Russia could supply a further 3 million tons within a short period, depending on the condition of its diesel refineries.
The proposed deliveries could total more than 4.8 million tons.
Putin said the additional Russian diesel supplies would benefit the global economy, according to the Kremlin.
The Russian president confirmed that the leaders had discussed energy markets, prospects for resolving the Ukraine conflict, developments involving Iran and bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington.
