The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Isaias, the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, struck near Destin, Florida, at approximately 8 p.m. local time as a Category 2 hurricane before weakening to Category 1.

More than 610,000 customers in Florida and Alabama were without power as the storm moved inland, according to outage tracking website PowerOutage.us.

Forecasters warned of life-threatening storm surges reaching up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) along the coastline between the Alabama-Florida border and Grayton Beach.

Other parts of the Florida Panhandle faced potential storm surges of up to 6 feet (1.8 meters), raising concerns about severe coastal flooding.

Florida, Georgia and Alabama declared states of emergency ahead of the storm, while the administration approved federal emergency declarations for Florida and Alabama to support response and recovery operations.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey ordered tourists and non-residents in parts of Baldwin and Mobile counties to evacuate immediately as conditions deteriorated.

Officials later announced that the evacuation window had closed after winds became too strong for safe travel.

The NHC forecast that Isaias would weaken into a post-tropical system on Saturday as it continued moving inland.

However, the storm was expected to bring additional heavy rainfall, with accumulations reaching up to 15 inches (38 centimeters) in some coastal areas.

Forecasters also warned of possible tornadoes and flash flooding across parts of the southeastern United States as the storm weakened.
