Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - ADEN — Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al-Jaber, announced Friday that the strategic Bab Al-Mandab Strait had been cleared of Houthi forces, as Yemeni government troops continued operations against remaining fighters in the area.
"Blessed Friday, and victory for every Yemeni and Arab. Bab Al-Mandab has been cleared of the remnants of the Houthi terrorist militia," Al-Jaber said in a post on X.
A Yemeni military source told Anadolu that government forces launched an operation Friday morning to secure full control of Bab Al-Mandab and Mayun Island, which overlooks the vital international shipping route.
The operation involved the Southern Giants Brigades and Nation's Shield Forces, backed by the Saudi-led Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, according to the source.
The Nation's Shield Forces said their units, alongside the Southern Giants Brigades, were pursuing Houthi fighters in the area as part of efforts to consolidate control over the strategic waterway.
Meanwhile, Yemeni government forces continued their offensive against Houthi positions across the central province of Marib under Operation Dawn of Yemen, according to the Yemeni Armed Forces Media Center.
The military said government troops, supported by Popular Resistance fighters, launched attacks on several Houthi positions along the southern fronts, breaching defensive fortifications, clearing minefields and forcing Houthi fighters to withdraw from several locations.
On the northern and northwestern fronts, government forces continued offensive operations and strikes against Houthi positions along the front lines.
The military said its units were also monitoring Houthi movements and reinforcements through surveillance and reconnaissance operations.
Warplanes, drones, artillery and rocket launchers targeted Houthi positions, troop concentrations, command centers, weapons depots and drone facilities across the battlefronts and in Houthi-controlled territory, according to the media center.
The military said dozens of Houthi fighters were killed or wounded in the fighting, while 22 government soldiers and Popular Resistance fighters were killed and others injured.
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
The latest escalation, which began in July, has triggered some of the heaviest fighting since the relative calm that followed a UN-brokered truce in 2022.
In September, Houthi forces captured several strategic areas in Hudaydah and Taiz provinces and advanced toward Mayun Island in the Bab Al-Mandab Strait.
Yemeni government forces launched Operation Dawn of Yemen earlier this week to recapture Houthi-held territory and restore government control over key strategic areas.
