Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - KATHMANDU — The combined death toll from devastating flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border has risen to 1,385, while more than 5,500 people remain missing 11 days after the disaster, officials said Sunday.
In Nepal, the death toll reached 1,342, with around 5,000 people, including 589 foreigners, still missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
More than 13,000 people have been rescued from flood-hit areas across the country.
Chinese authorities, meanwhile, reported at least 43 deaths and 519 people missing in the southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet.
Official figures from Nepal and China indicate that 850 foreigners are among the 5,519 people still missing.
The disaster has severely damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure, complicating relief operations and leaving thousands of displaced people in temporary shelters.
Expectant and new mothers are among those facing particularly difficult conditions, with limited access to adequate food, sanitation, privacy and medical care, the Kathmandu Post reported.
Around 4,430 pregnant women are living in affected areas across 15 municipalities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, among the districts hardest hit by the floods, according to UN Population Fund estimates.
Around 500 births are expected in the coming month, with an estimated 74 women potentially requiring emergency obstetric care.
At Trishuli Hospital, medical staff have performed nine deliveries since the floods but are struggling with rising demand and unreliable electricity. A generator is being used as the sole source of power for surgeries.
Patients have also been arriving with fever, reduced fetal movement and urinary tract infections during pregnancy, according to Basanti Pancha, head of the hospital's maternity department.
Damaged roads and landslides have also severely disrupted access to Kathmandu, making transfers of patients requiring additional care more difficult.
Pakistan on Sunday dispatched 100 tons of humanitarian aid to Nepal’s flood-hit areas, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The relief shipment included tents, blankets, mats, hygiene kits and medicines.
