Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday accused Russia of carrying out “demonstrative strikes” on airports in Kyiv and Boryspil ahead of a planned visit by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Zelenskyy said the overnight strikes appeared intended as a response to discussions over the possibility of the US delegation flying directly into Ukraine.
“Clearly, these Russian strikes on the airports are a reaction to the discussions and preparations for the possibility of the U.S. side using an aircraft to travel to Ukraine and land at Kyiv Airport or Boryspil Airport,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
He said Russia deliberately targeted the airports “for the first time in a while.”
“Russian-Iranian ‘shaheds’ in response to American diplomacy,” he said.
Zelenskyy also warned that Ukraine would respond, saying Kyiv would adjust its operations next week concerning Russian airspace.
“We have taken note of this Russian move, and next week we will adjust our operation accordingly regarding Russian airspace, which has become dangerous because of our drones and missiles in the sky,” he said.
The Ukrainian president stressed that Kyiv would not allow threats to undermine diplomatic efforts and remained interested in bringing an end to the war closer.
“Russia will be held accountable for what it does,” he added.
Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday for talks aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war and are expected to travel to Kyiv on Sunday.
Zelenskyy earlier confirmed that the two US envoys would visit the Ukrainian capital following their Moscow talks.
The trip would mark their first visit to Kyiv. Both have made several trips to Moscow since US-mediated peace efforts began, most recently on Jan. 22, when they met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
