Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - MOSCOW — US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday for talks aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, Russian state news agency Tass reported.
A special aircraft carrying the two US envoys landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, where Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev met them, according to the report.
Axios and Tass reported Friday that Witkoff and Kushner would travel to both Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the US envoys would visit Kyiv on Sunday following their talks in the Russian capital.
It would mark the first visit to Kyiv by Witkoff and Kushner, both of whom have made several trips to Moscow since US-mediated efforts to end the war began. Their most recent visit to Moscow was Jan. 22, when they met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
Trump said Friday that the two negotiators were carrying a proposal aimed at ending the war rather than presenting a series of new proposals.
“They’re bringing with them a proposal to end the war,” Trump said.
He attributed some of the difficulty in reaching a settlement to the relationship between Putin and Zelenskyy.
“It’s a personality problem in Russia-Ukraine. You have President Zelensky and President Putin. They truly hate each other,” Trump said.
Trump said he dispatched Witkoff and Kushner to determine whether progress could be made toward ending the conflict.
“They’re two great negotiators. They’ve done a great job,” he said, adding that “there may be a good chance” of reaching an agreement.
Moscow and Kyiv last held US-mediated peace negotiations earlier this year, with three rounds of talks on Jan. 23-24, Feb. 4-5 and Feb. 17-18.
The first two rounds took place in Abu Dhabi and the third in Geneva.
The negotiations have since been paused, with Moscow and Kyiv attributing the halt to Washington's increased focus on Iran following the outbreak of war in late February.
