Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - DUBAI — Concerns rose again throughout the Middle East on Wednesday after the US military launched a series of deadly attacks on Iran overnight and Tehran retaliated by firing missiles and drones at various sites across the Gulf region and Jordan.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says four soldiers died in a US attack on Kermanshah province while at least five civilians were killed and dozens wounded when a US missile hit a home hosting a wedding in southern Sirik county.
US Central Command said in a statement early Wednesday that it had completed the latest barrage against Iranian military targets including air defense sites, radar systems and maritime assets.
Iranian state media reported that the US had bombed civilian sites along Iran’s southern coast and hit a civilian airport.
A US strike hit a home where a wedding ceremony was being held in Kuhestak in southern Iran, killing five people, including a child, and wounding at least 68 others, Ahmad Nafisi, Hormozgan Province’s deputy governor, told Iranian state television in a phone call.
The Iranian Red Crescent said the strike took place around 21:30 local time (19:00 BST) on Tuesday, when the wedding ceremony was under way in Kuhestak.
“Make no mistake: these crimes will not go unpunished,” Ebrahim Azizi, chairperson of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on X.
Video shared by an Iranian government account showed debris and damage at what it said was the wedding site in Sirik following the attack, with people heard screaming in the background.
“Unfortunately, this is a residential building and unfortunately this happened during my daughter’s wedding ceremony,” Ali Mallahi, father of the bride, said in a video carried by state TV.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei on Wednesday said the US was guilty of a “war crime” after the Iranian Red Crescent reported the US bombing of the wedding in southern Iran.
"The truth of this unlawful war of choice – and the true face of the war crime – is in Sirik, where a wedding ceremony was brutally bombed as part of America's desperate struggle to conceal its failure," Baghaei wrote on X.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society has written to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, denouncing the US strikes at the wedding ceremony.

Iran's security chief warned the United States would face a "new strategy" from Tehran in the Middle East war after the heaviest exchange of attacks between the foes in weeks.
"You will soon see that Iran's new strategy on the battlefield, in diplomacy and in confronting the economic blockade will shatter your foundations," Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei posted on X.

Jordan’s military said it shot down 10 of the missiles and the three remaining landed in unpopulated areas. Explosions that appeared to be interceptions of incoming air attacks were seen over Aqaba.
Kuwait on Wednesday said an Iranian drone attack caused a fire in a residential complex in the capital but there were no casualties and it was brought under control.
“A fire that broke out in a residential complex in the Capital Governorate has been brought under control. The complex had been targeted by a hostile drone launched as part of the nefarious Iranian aggression,” Kuwait’s official KUNA news agency said quoting a fire department spokesman, adding there were no casualties.
The Kuwaiti Army earlier said on X that its air defenses intercepted drone attacks “following the criminal Iranian aggression.”
Iran also said it launched a drone attack at US forces in Bahrain, but that country said all attacks had been intercepted.
The Gulf Cooperation Council has condemned Iran’s retaliatory attacks against Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan calling them “heinous”, the secretary-general of the group said in a statement.
“These Iranian attacks represent a blatant violation of the sovereignty of states and a direct threat to their security and stability,” said Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi.
Iranian state television said US strikes hit a fishmeal factory on Qeshm Island and several civilian sites in Hormozgan province. It said a fishing pier and a Ports and Maritime Organization tower in Sirik were among the locations struck.
State TV also reported that the US military struck the civilian Jiroft Airport in central Iran’s Kerman province, saying a projectile struck an area outside the runway and caused no casualties or damage to airport infrastructure.
Tavanir, Iran’s electricity grid management company, said several parts of Hormozgan province’s power network had been struck, state TV reported. It said authorities were working to restore resulting outages.
Oil prices have moved sharply higher this week with renewed clashes between Iran and the United States. Crude, already up about 7 percent this week, continued to rise following the strikes on Tuesday.
Russia has denounced the recent surge in attacks in the US war on Iran.
“We regret the recent escalation surrounding Iran and are doing everything we can to reduce its intensity,” a Foreign Ministry spokesperson told Al Jazeera.
“What is happening in the Gulf region is a terrible adventure that has led to dire consequences.”
The renewed fighting “confirms our expectations that the truce agreement has not been implemented”, added the spokesperson.
China’s President Xi Jinping rejected “external interference” in the Middle East.
During talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo, Xi said external powers should stop their double standards in the region, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Meanwhile, American citizens in Saudi Arabia have been warned to take precautions as attacks surge between the US and Iran.
“Due to tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation,” the US embassy in Saudi Arabia said in a post.
“Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise heightened vigilance and be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.”
