Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump on Sunday renewed his criticism of Canada as a deepening trade dispute between the two neighbors threatened to further strain relations, saying Ottawa wanted the benefits of being part of the United States without becoming a state.
“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump also accused Canada of imposing steep tariffs on US agricultural products over many years.
“They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!” he said.
The remarks came as tensions intensified following the imposition of new US tariffs and Canada’s announcement that it would retaliate with matching measures.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday accused Washington of using its tariffs to “hurt and divide” Canada, describing the measures as a “miscalculation.”
“The new US tariffs are designed to hurt and divide us,” Carney said. “They’re a miscalculation because Canadians will always take care of each other.”
Carney said Canada would impose dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs beginning Sept. 8, targeting products including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp, paper and electronics.
He also said Canada would not surrender “exclusive access” to its critical minerals as part of any agreement with Washington.
The Canadian leader said Ottawa had suspended trade negotiations after the United States introduced demands that Canada could not accept.
Washington offered a different account of the breakdown.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada walked away at the last minute from a nearly completed agreement that would have further reduced tariffs on Canadian exports to the US.
“Despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days,” Greer said.
He did not disclose details of the proposed agreement.
The dispute represents another escalation in economic tensions between two of the world’s most closely integrated trading partners.
The United States and Canada, along with Mexico, are parties to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which took effect in 2020 and governs much of the trade among the three countries.
