Arday resigned from Cambridge on Aug. 5. He denied plagiarism but acknowledged making some mistakes while working on his doctorate.
His death has also fueled a wider debate over whether the scrutiny he faced developed into a public campaign shaped by racism and hostility toward diversity, equity and inclusion policies.
Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said questions about Arday’s credibility had “unleashed a tirade of racism,” arguing that there was a difference between legitimate scrutiny and turning an individual into a symbol in a broader political battle over DEI.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said Arday had been “the victim of a pernicious public shaming that other people in his position simply wouldn’t have faced.”
Former Conservative Home Secretary James Cleverly, meanwhile, said academic institutions had “serious questions to answer,” arguing that Arday had been placed in high-profile positions for which he was not sufficiently qualified.
Cambridge has said it will review its procedures for appointing senior academic staff.
