Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - DUBAI — Iran said on Monday there were no talks under way with the United States and no plans for any meetings, contradicting US President Donald Trump who had cited talks he said would take place that afternoon as justification for calling off attacks.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had been asked by Iran and US allies in the Middle East to "hold off" as the "perimeters" of a deal had been agreed.
Speaking on board Air Force One later on Sunday, Trump said Iran "knew the extent of the attack because they saw it forming", adding: "We're talking to them in the form of a negotiation. It begins tomorrow afternoon."
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei rejected Trump's claim, saying no negotiations with the United States were taking place and no meetings were scheduled. Iran had no plans to host foreign delegations or send negotiators abroad in the coming days, he told reporters at a weekly press briefing on Monday.
Baghaei added that all Iranian negotiators were currently in the country, apart from Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who was on a private visit in Iraq. The only talks under way, he said, were discussions with Oman over management of the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are now going to reach an understanding on a route acceptable to both sides – neither the northern route nor the southern route – but one that respects the sovereign rights of both sides and safeguards our national interests and security,” he told Iranian state television.
A senior Iranian source also told Reuters that no talks were planned and that Araqchi would be unavailable at least until the end of the week.
Pakistani government sources have said "no date or venue” has yet been finalized for the resumption of long-stalled direct talks between the US and Iran aimed at ending their months-long war.
“There is no meeting (between US and Iranian negotiators) scheduled in Islamabad, at least in the next 24 hours,” a senior Pakistani official told Turkish news agency Anadolu on Monday
The official was responding to Trump’s statement that new negotiations with Iran would begin Monday afternoon.
Earlier talks between the US and Iran have been facilitated through mediators.
Pakistani and Qatari mediators are in contact with Washington and Tehran to finalize a date and venue for the resumption of direct talks, the sources said.
In his remarks on Air Force One, Trump declined to outline a deadline for a deal to be struck with Tehran, adding: "We'll just see how it is. We're ready to go anytime we want... I'm not looking to kill people."
Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is expected to visit Tehran “in a day or two” to discuss matters related to reviving the talks, they said.
Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency denied that Tehran had asked the US to hold off on further military action, saying Trump's claims were "nothing but a new lie".
Monday's developments appeared to fit a pattern that has emerged since Trump launched "Operation Epic Fury" alongside Israel more than five months ago. On several occasions, Trump has threatened military action only to later cite diplomatic contacts as a reason for stepping back.
Iran, however, has publicly rejected negotiations with Washington since a June memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict collapsed in early July.
During his remarks on Air Force One, Trump said that the planned strikes would have been "the biggest attack since World War Two", and could have derailed prospects of a negotiated end to the months-long war.
Trump declined to answer if he had been planning to strike Iranian energy infrastructure, which international law experts have said could constitute a war crime.
Iran's acting Defence Minister Majid Ibn al-Reza earlier said Tehran viewed every threat from its adversaries as "real and credible" even if it formed part of psychological warfare.
"We will neither be caught off guard nor remain passive," he added.
