The Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi with 232 passengers and 39 crew members when the fire broke out between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. in waters off Sumenep regency, according to Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

The ferry operator, PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran, alerted rescue authorities about an hour after the fire began. Officials later lost contact with the vessel's captain.

Authorities determined the ferry's location about 19 nautical miles north of Buruan Sapudi Island after communicating with a nearby cargo ship that was unable to approach because it was carrying flammable cargo.

Videos released by Basarnas showed thick black smoke engulfing the ferry as passengers wearing life jackets gathered on the upper decks awaiting rescue. Other footage circulating on social media appeared to show some passengers jumping into the sea to escape the flames.

A tugboat and other nearby vessels began evacuating passengers shortly before 10 a.m.

By Sunday afternoon, rescuers had saved 225 passengers and crew members and recovered five bodies, while 41 people remained unaccounted for.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and remains under investigation.

Search and rescue teams dispatched vessels from Surabaya and Sumenep, while the Indonesian Navy deployed a warship to assist in the operation.

The 160-meter-long ferry operates the Surabaya-Makassar route, a journey of about 40 hours that serves both passenger and cargo traffic between Java and Sulawesi.
