SYDNEY, July 25 — The manager of a pub in Australia has had his license to sell revoked after a patron consumed 21 drinks in five hours and collapsed in the street.
New South Wales state’s alcohol licensing said this week the man entered the Gladstone Hotel in Stockton just after midday on March 23, 2024.
He proceeded to drink 19 beers, a shot of tequila and another of Cointreau, growing progressively more intoxicated over the course of the afternoon.
The man was seen “stumbling into furniture” and “being overly friendly with other patrons”, before leaving the pub “unable to stand or walk steadily”.
CCTV footage shared by the state’s hospitality and tourism department showed the man collapsing on the street and being helped by a passerby following the marathon session.
He was then reportedly helped into a car.
Authorities found the pub manager had failed in his responsibility to prevent intoxication on the premises — and even egged on the man by bringing him a fresh beer before he had finished the previous one.
“This patron displayed multiple signs of intoxication that should have been identified and acted upon by staff well before the patron reached such a dangerous state,” Liquor and Gaming NSW Executive Director Regulatory Operations Dimitri Argeres said.
Bar manager Mark Keegan insisted that the patron had seemed fine, except for a “slight stumble”.
It is the second time the pub has been sanctioned for excessive drinking on its premises — in 2024 the manager’s wife was banned after the same patron drank 22 beers and a shot in one sitting.
Beer consumption in Australia has declined in the past five decades, but for many the drink remains an important part of the culture.
