Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - WASHINGTON — The US military said one US service member was missing and three others were injured after their MH-60S Seahawk helicopter made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea on Wednesday.
The US Navy's Fifth Fleet said in a statement that search and rescue operations are ongoing for the missing crew member.
The statement added that there are no indications so far that the emergency was caused by hostile action, noting that the MH-60S Sea Hawk went into the water at 3:30 a.m.Eastern time, which is about 11 a.m. local time.
The Navy statement did not say whether the aircraft sank or was recovered. The helicopter was assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush, one of two aircraft carriers deployed in the waters off Iran.
The USS George H.W. Bush has been in the Middle East since late April. While the US has rescinded its blockade of vessels traveling into and out of the Strait of Hormuz, it still has a sizable military presence in the area.
The US had lost 42 fixed-wing or rotor aircraft in Operation Epic Fury as of mid-May, the last time an update was given to Congress.
That does not include the US Apache helicopter shot down by an Iranian drone in early June. The two crew members on that helicopter were able to be rescued. That incident precipitated the US "self-defense strikes" against Iran.
