Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - DUBAI — Iran has claimed new attacks on American military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, and targeted two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for latest waves of US attacks on the country.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched drone strikes on Bahrain’s Sheikh Isa airbase and Kuwait’s Ali Al Salem and Ahmad Al-Jaber airbases early on Thursday.
Kuwait said it was dealing with aerial threats and Bahrain activated air raid sirens early Thursday after a night of clashes between the US and Iran threatened to reignite the Middle East war.
The Kuwaiti army said, in a post on social media, that “air defense systems are currently intercepting hostile aerial targets.”
The Gulf nation also briefly shut its airspace and diverted flights due to the attacks.
“Air traffic in Kuwaiti airspace has returned to normal,” the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a statement.
The Bahrain Ministry of the Interior said the attacks resulted in a minor injury to an 11-year-old girl, burning of vehicles, and damage to homes in Hamad City and the capital Manama due to shrapnel from intercepted Iranian drones.
IRGC said Thursday it had fired ballistic missiles at a US command center in Jordan, according to state media. Jordanian air defense systems intercepted and shot down 20 missiles launched from Iran towards the Blue Zone, state media reported.
The IRGC said the strikes were in response to the US' “repeated violations” of an April ceasefire and declared the Strait of Hormuz “closed until further notice”.
This “punitive operation against the aggressor” targeted “Al-Azraq Air Base and its control center, using 12 ballistic missiles,” the IRGC said, as quoted by the Tasnim news agency, claiming to have destroyed these facilities “and a large number of fighter aircraft.”
It was the third time this week that back-and-forth strikes have tested a two-month shaky ceasefire. On Monday, Iran and Israel targeted each other.
