Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - ISLAMABAD — Trilateral talks between the United States, Iran and Pakistan extended into Sunday, entering a second day of negotiations as discussions continued past midnight, Pakistani government sources said.
The latest round resumed after a dinner break and has been described as “normal” and “positive” in tone, according to officials familiar with the talks.
A senior White House official confirmed that in-person negotiations were ongoing as of 1:55 a.m. local time (2055 GMT).
The discussions initially began with indirect exchanges before progressing to face-to-face meetings between the two sides.
Sources said written texts were exchanged ahead of the break, signaling cautious progress in the high-stakes negotiations, which have now lasted more than seven hours in total.
The US delegation is led by Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner.
Iran’s delegation is headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and senior official Ali Bagheri Kani also taking part.
Senior Pakistani officials are facilitating the negotiations, reinforcing Islamabad’s role as a key mediator.
Sources said a face-to-face session included Vance, Qalibaf, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Field Marshal Asim Munir.
According to IRIB, expert teams from both sides are also engaged in technical-level talks through specialized committees, with the negotiations entering a “sensitive phase.”
Sources close to the Iranian delegation cited “persistent differences” between the two sides, describing what they called a “maximalist approach” by the United States.
Pakistan is hosting the talks as part of efforts to end the broader regional conflict, following a fragile two-week ceasefire brokered earlier this week.
