Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - WASHINGTON/TEHRAN — Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead, Iranian state media confirmed early Sunday, following a major joint US–Israeli military operation that targeted Iranian military and governmental sites.

Iranian state television and the official IRNA news agency reported the death of the 86-year-old leader without detailing the precise cause.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Khamenei had been killed in what he described as a coordinated American-Israeli strike.

The assassination of the second supreme leader of the Islamic Republic and the most powerful figure in Iran for more than three decades marks one of the most consequential developments in modern Middle Eastern history and throws the future of the Iranian regime into deep uncertainty.

Trump declared the killing “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country,” calling Khamenei “one of the most evil people in history.”

In a social media statement, he said the Iranian leader “was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems and, working closely with Israel, there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do.”

The death followed waves of aerial bombardment that struck Iranian military infrastructure and key government sites. Some of the earliest strikes reportedly hit areas near the offices of the supreme leader in Tehran. Thick smoke was seen rising across parts of the capital as explosions rocked the city.

The operation represents a dramatic escalation after days of mounting regional tensions. Israel had earlier announced a large-scale military campaign against Iranian targets, with Washington confirming that American forces had launched major combat operations aimed at eliminating what they described as imminent threats posed by Tehran’s missile and nuclear programs.
