BANGKOK, Oct 29 — Thailand has urged Israeli tourists to behave respectfully while visiting the country following a meeting between Thai police and a senior Israeli security official to address increasing public frustration over their conduct.
According to the Bangkok Post, Surat Thani police chief Pol Maj Gen Suwat Suksri said Israeli Security Council adviser Avi Bitton supported swift and firm action against Israeli citizens who break Thai laws, including those operating illegal businesses.
“We hope the discussion will help resolve the problem of Israeli tourists engaging in inappropriate behaviour,” Suwat said after the meeting in Phuket.
The talks, attended by senior police officers from southern provinces, were held amid growing discontent over the behaviour of Israeli visitors and expatriates in popular destinations such as Pai, Phuket, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.
Local residents and businesses have voiced frustration over reports of unruly conduct and illegal ventures involving Israeli nationals.
Chabad communities — religious and cultural centres catering to Israelis, including reservists returning from the Gaza conflict — have been established in several areas, with six currently operating in Thailand.
During the meeting, Bitton called for increased security at these locations and pledged cooperation with Thai authorities, allowing inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
Tourism data showed that about 300,000 Israeli travellers visited Thailand between January and September this year — a 57 per cent increase from the same period last year.
The Times of Israel attributed the rise to Israelis seeking respite after military service or reserve duty linked to the ongoing war in Gaza.
However, the influx has also sparked tension.
On October 14, four Israelis were arrested on Koh Samui for allegedly holding a drug-fuelled party, while a viral incident in May saw an Israeli woman refusing to remove her shoes before entering a restaurant in Koh Phangan, reportedly telling staff, “My money built your country.”
Authorities and business operators have repeatedly raised concerns about such incidents and the presence of illegal foreign-run businesses.
In response, the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok issued a Facebook advisory on Saturday urging its citizens to show respect during the national mourning period for Queen Sirikit, who passed away on Friday.
The embassy advised visitors to “avoid loud music, parties or public celebrations, dress modestly, and respect the atmosphere of mourning for the next 30 days.”
