KATHMANDU, Oct 17 — Kancha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the 1953 Mount Everest expedition that made the first successful ascent of the world’s highest peak, has died in Nepal at the age of 92, his family said on Thursday.

Sherpa passed away at his home in Kathmandu, according to his grandson Tenzing Chogyal Sherpa.

“Of late, he was having some issues with his throat. Otherwise he had no major health issue for a person of his age,” Tenzing told dpa.

Nepal Mountaineering Association president Fur Gelje Sherpa paid tribute to him in a Facebook post, describing his death as a great loss for Nepal’s climbing community.

“His contribution to mountaineering and tourism was invaluable and helped introduce Nepal to the world,” he wrote, adding that the association was deeply saddened by the passing of “an inspiring personality, a symbol of history and pride.”

Born as Ang Phurba Sherpa in 1932 in Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest, Kancha began his mountaineering journey during his late teenage years after running away from home to Darjeeling in search of work.

There, he met Tenzing Norgay, who helped him join Edmund Hillary’s expedition as one of 103 Sherpas supporting the British-led team.

“His birth name was Ang Phurba Sherpa, but his parents affectionately called him Kancha. That’s how he later became known as Kancha Sherpa, a name he eventually embraced officially,” his son Tshering Sherpa said.

Hillary and Norgay, both 39 at the time, became the first to reach the 8,848.86-metre summit on May 29, 1953. Since then, Everest has been climbed around 13,000 times. — Bernama-dpa
