KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — Asean stakeholders have jointly rejected Myanmar’s planned military-run elections, calling them illegitimate and a direct violation of the bloc’s Five-Point Consensus, following a series of meetings led by Malaysia in its role as Asean Chair.

The meetings, convened by Special Envoy Tan Sri Othman Hashim, brought together representatives from the National Unity Government (NUG), Ethnic Resistance Organisations (EROs), and other civil society and political bodies.

In a statement today, participants condemned the junta’s continued violence against civilians and its disregard for democratic norms. They stressed that any election held under military rule — amid ongoing conflict and the exclusion of key stakeholders — would only entrench authoritarian control and further destabilise the region.

The group called for Asean to take urgent, time-bound action to end violence, protect civilians, and ensure humanitarian aid reaches conflict zones. They also urged the immediate release of political prisoners and stronger measures to hold the junta accountable for non-compliance with the Five-Point Consensus.

The meetings concluded with appreciation for Malaysia’s leadership and a renewed call for Asean to stand firmly with the people of Myanmar. Stakeholders emphasised that peace, justice, and a federal democratic future can only be achieved through inclusive dialogue — not through any process that legitimises military rule.
