NARATHIWAT, Oct 6 — Thai police are hunting for a group of 10 men believed to be involved in a robbery at a gold shop and escaped with jewellery worth over 35 million baht (RM4.5 million) in Sungai Kolok here on Sunday evening.

Southern Border Provincial Police Commander, Major General Chumpol Saksurimongkol, said that in the incident, which occurred around 6.30 pm local time, the armed group robbed the gold shop located inside the supermarket before firing several shots at military personnel stationed nearby.

He said the suspects fled with more than nine kilogrammes of gold using two four-wheel-drive vehicles, which were reported stolen.

According to him, investigations also revealed that the robbery was part of a larger operation involving about 20 suspects believed to be engaged in organised criminal activities, including robberies, vehicle thefts, and coordinated bomb attacks.

“Preliminary investigations found that the group had planned the crime meticulously, including deploying other gang members to plant shrapnel bombs filled with nails near the supermarket to disrupt law enforcement operations,” he told reporters after visiting the scene on Monday.

Chumpol urged members of the public with any information on the incident to come forward and report to them.

“We do not rule out the possibility that this group has a wide network and experience in carrying out armed attacks in border areas,” he said.

Meanwhile, a soldier and a civilian who were reported injured by stray bullets during the robbery were taken to Sungai Kolok Hospital for treatment. — Bernama
