Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - SEOUL — Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was released from custody on Saturday after prosecutors ordered his release following a court ruling in his favor.
On Friday, the Seoul Central District Court granted Yoon’s request to overturn his arrest, leading to his immediate release.
In a statement after his release, Yoon expressed gratitude to the court, praising its "courage and determination in correcting illegality," according to Yonhap news agency.
Yoon had filed a request last month with the Seoul Central District Court, arguing that his indictment over the short-lived martial law declaration was unlawful.
His release comes 52 days after he was detained on Jan. 15 in connection with the controversial martial law decree he issued on Dec. 3. He was formally arrested on Jan. 19 and later indicted on Jan. 26.
Yoon remains under criminal investigation for abuse of power and leading an insurrection, as authorities continue their probe into the failed martial law declaration. — Agencies
