Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - SEOUL — South Korean prosecutors filed a new request on Saturday to extend the detention of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, local media reported.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the request follows a court decision on Friday rejecting an earlier bid to extend Yoon’s detention.

Prosecutors are now seeking to hold him in custody until February 6, citing the need for additional investigations.

Yoon, who was arrested on Sunday, can legally be detained for up to 10 days, with the possibility of a 10-day extension.

The renewed request comes after the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials handed over the martial law probe case to prosecutors on Thursday.

The impeached president is under investigation for allegedly orchestrating the December 3 martial law declaration and for abusing his power by deploying troops to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting down the decree. Yoon has so far refused to cooperate with questioning by prosecutors or the anti-graft body.

Yoon was impeached by parliament on December 14 and remains suspended from his duties while the Constitutional Court reviews the impeachment.

If the court upholds the impeachment, a presidential election must be held within two months. If the impeachment is dismissed, Yoon will be reinstated as president. — Agencies
