Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - BUCHAREST — National exit polls estimate that Romania’s future parliament and government will continue Romania’s strong pro-EU, pro-NATO and pro-Ukraine national strategy, despite a surge by the ultra-nationalist contenders.
According to the tight projections by pollster CURS quoted by Euronews Romania, the currently governing Social Democrats lead with 26% of the votes, followed by the moderate-nationalist AUR with 19%. The third and fourth places are disputed within the margin of error by the Liberals, currently in the coalition government with the Social-Democrats, and the pro-EU Union for the Salvation of Romania, the party of the second round presidential candidate Elena Lasconi. The following positions and fighting for the Parliament entry threshold are the smaller pro and anti-EU parties, also within a tight margin of error which show their results too close to call.
The exit polls show that the Euro-Atlantic forces have enough votes to secure the majority in the future parliament which can form a strong government that can continue Romania’s traditionally strong pro-EU, pro-NATO and pro-Ukraine policies.
The either moderate or ultra anti-EU forces have surged and they will form a strong opposition in the future parliament.
These results are based on a major turnout prompted by the shock rise of an ultranationalist in the first round of the presidential elections last Sunday. More Romanians went to vote than in 2020 following a harrowing week of recriminations and calls for a national emergency vote to safeguard Romania’s Euro-Atlantic traditions and future. — Euronews
