MANILA, Aug 19 — The Philippines has detected a new case of the mpox infection in the country — the first since December last year — its Department of Health said today.

Philippines news outlet ABS-CBN reported that the patient is a 33-year-old Filipino male “with no travel history outside the Philippines but with close, intimate contact three weeks before symptom onset.”

The case, reported to the department yesterday, is the 10th confirmed mpox case in the country.

It was reported that the patient’s symptoms started more than a week ago with a fever.

He developed a distinct rash on the face, back, nape, trunk, and groin, as well as on palms and soles four days later, said the report.

The last mpox case in the Philippines was detected in December 2023, but they have all recovered.

Last week, the World Health Organisation declared the mpox surge in Africa a global public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).

Worried by the rise in cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the spread to nearby countries, the WHO hastily convened a meeting of experts to study the outbreak.

A PHEIC is the highest level of alarm under the International Health Regulations, which are legally binding on 196 countries.

Formerly called monkeypox, mpox is an infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals but can also be passed from human to human through close physical contact.
