Japan’s cabinet has approved a record defense budget of 5.4 trillion yen ($47 billion) for the 2022 fiscal year.
The council approved the budget, which includes funding for research and development of a new combat aircraft and other “game-changing” weapons as Japan builds up its defense capabilities in response to China’s growing military power and its tensions with Taiwan.
The 1.1 percent budget increase for the year beginning in April is the 10th consecutive increase in defense spending, and is in line with Japan’s pledge to the United States to enhance its defense capabilities to deal with increasingly difficult security issues in the region.
The budget, which still needs parliamentary approval, includes a record 291 billion yen ($2.55 billion) for defense research and development, up 38 percent from this year.
A total of 100 billion yen ($870 million) has been allocated to develop the FX fighter jet to replace Japan’s aging fleet of F-2s in 2035. It will be Japan’s first domestically developed combat aircraft in 40 years.
