The fall of money from a truck that was traveling on a highway in the United States of America led to a frantic stampede, which required police intervention.
Video images on social media showed cash flowing from the truck, and people rushing to pick up what they could.
The accident occurred Friday morning on a highway passing through the San Diego area, California.
Police said the sight of money lying on the road prompted drivers to abandon their vehicles, blocking traffic. The police arrested a number of them, and demanded that those who took money return them.
This happened after the door of one of the trucks opened, and bags of banknotes fell in succession, and were scattered on the highway at 9:15 in the morning.
“For some reason the money started pouring out of the truck. The banknotes were flying on the highway,” said Highway Patrol Officer Jim Petoncourt.
Pictures posted online by Demi Bagby showed traffic parked on the road and people picking up and playing with $1 and $20 bills.
She commented, “This is the strangest thing I’ve ever seen.” Pictures after that showed the road, usually heavy traffic, completely deserted.
According to local media, the police arrested two people.
The Highway Police said the FBI had taken over the investigation and had asked anyone who took money to contact the FBI.
Police Chief Curtis Martin said Friday evening that a number of those who took money returned it to the police.
“People returned a lot of money,” he added, without specifying a specific amount. “They took a lot.”
