The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, expressed disappointment that Africa obtained only two percent of the vaccines against the emerging coronavirus (Covid 19), while the rest of the world received more than 5.7 billion doses of this vaccine.

Ghebreyesus said in a press conference via video conference that only two countries in the African continent, which has more than 1.2 billion people, were able to achieve the goal of giving 40 percent of the population the vaccine, which is the lowest level in the world.

He stressed, “This is not because African countries do not have the ability or experience to offer Corona vaccines, but rather because the world has abandoned them.”

“This situation leaves people at a high risk of disease and death due to exposure to a deadly virus, while many other people around the world are protected from it,” Ghebreyesus explained.

He stressed that the longer the inequality in the distribution of vaccines continues, the more the virus and its variants will continue to spread, the longer the social and economic turmoil will continue, and the greater the chances of the emergence of more variables that make vaccines less effective.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization called on all countries and manufacturers to share information on bilateral deals, supply and delivery forecasts and familiarize themselves with all vaccines with the WHO Emergency Use List.
