Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - WASHINGTON — Republican senators sent an urgent letter to US President Joe Biden Thursday, calling on him to investigate Special Presidential envoy for Climate John Kerry, local media reported.
According to the report, 19 senators signed the letter, accusing Kerry of working with American adversaries against the national security interest.
“We write to convey our grave concerns over US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry’s position as a member of your administration's National Security Council and his record — both past and present — of potentially working with America’s adversaries against our national security interests and those of our allies,” the letter read.
“We ask you to investigate recent allegations that Secretary Kerry revealed sensitive information to the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and if true, call for his removal from your national security team.”
On Sunday, The New York Times (NYT) published a report that leaked audio of Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif revealed Kerry informed him of Israeli attacks on Iranian interests.
“Former Secretary of State John Kerry informed him that Israel had attacked Iranian interests in Syria at least 200 times, to his astonishment, Zarif said,” NYT reported.
Kerry received immediate backlash over the report, with former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asking Kerry to come clean about his discussions with Zarif.
“John Kerry owes the American people an explanation of what exactly he discussed with the Iranians,” Pompeo wrote in an opinion piece published on Fox News.
“The legacy of the Obama administration’s Middle East policies is failure. The same people who presided over those failed policies ... are back in charge now, and they seem wholly committed to repeating their past mistakes,” the former US secretary of state said, referring to Kerry, who was an architect of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
Pompeo accused Kerry, who served as President Barack Obama’s secretary of state between 2013 and 2017, of using “these backdoor channels to undermine” Israel and to discuss sensitive Israeli military operations.
“It is quite possible that while I was briefing President (Donald) Trump about Iranian operations in Syria, Kerry was briefing Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and other top Iranian officials about Israeli operations there,” Pompeo said. — Agencies
