Heavy snowfall during the storm caused thousands of Spanish drivers to be trapped in their cars on Friday, amid the closure of many roads and the airport in the Spanish capital, Madrid.

Traffic authorities said the M-30 and M-40 motorways near Madrid were among more than 400 roads where snow obstructed traffic. The authorities called on citizens to avoid unnecessary travel due to the extremely exceptional snowstorm.

Meteorologists predicted that Friday’s total snowfall would reach 20 cm and temperatures hover around freezing. The Red Cross took food to the truck drivers who were trapped on a road.

“Due to bad weather, flights are diverting from Madrid-Barajas airport,” the country’s airport operator said on Twitter.

Madrid and eight provinces faced the most severe weather warnings for the first time since the weather warning system was created in 2007.

The authorities said they had closed Madrid’s major parks, including the famous Retiro Park adjacent to the Prado Museum, as a precaution.

High-speed rail services between Madrid and the cities of Alicante and Valencia, in the southeast of the country, have been suspended.

The state meteorological agency said it had recorded a record low of 35.6 degrees Celsius in northern Spain.
