A study conducted by researchers at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Georgia, USA, indicated that in the face of the emerging corona virus, the world needs treatments that reduce the risk of complications from the epidemic, in addition to vaccines, noting that they have a candidate who can help achieve this goal.

The American University researchers confirmed that taking antivirals orally can prevent the spread of “Covid-19”.

The authors of the study, whose results were published in the scientific journal “Nature Microbiology”, said that the anti-viral drug “monlopiravir” is able to prevent transmission of the Corona virus within 24 hours.

According to the supervisor of the study, Dr. Richard Plimber, the effective drug against the influenza virus is able to stop the release or transmission of Covid-19, due to its effectiveness against respiratory viruses.

Blimber added: “Scientists noticed after subjecting animals infected with coronavirus to the drug that it reduced the amount of viral particles, which necessarily means reducing the chances of transmission.”

According to researchers, the drug has important advantages, the first of which is that it prevents the emergence of severe symptoms of Covid-19, as it shortens the duration of the contagious period, and quickly suppresses the “virus”.

The drug can reduce the reproduction of the virus inside the body, and thus reduce the “viral load” significantly in patients, according to “Sky News Arabia”.

That is, if there is not enough virus in the body, patients will experience less severe symptoms, if any, and they will be less likely to infect others around them.

The scientists arrived at the results of their study based on an experiment during which they injected a group of rodents with the “SARS-Cove-2” virus, and treated them with an anti-viral drug after symptoms of the disease appeared.

After that, the researchers exposed healthy rodents to those that received the drug, but no infection was recorded among those who recovered, which indicates that the infection is not transmitted.
