Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is currently having a particularly heated argument with the EU Commission. The 59-year-old Szájer is his most important man in Brussels. He is the one who has to ensure that the bridge to the group of the conservative European People’s Party, to which the Orbán party belongs, does not finally collapse. So the timing of Szájer’s withdrawal must have come as a surprise.

The actual reasons were even more surprising. The public prosecutor in Brussels announced that he was caught in a sex orgy by homosexuals with drugs. Celebrating orgies is not generally prohibited in Belgium, but it is currently. Since the beginning of November, a curfew has come into effect every evening in Brussels and the French-speaking part at 10 p.m. Each Belgian may receive a maximum of two guests indoors.

In this case, neighbors heard noise, suspected illegal activities and called the police. “We interrupted a gangbang,” the newspaper “La Dernier Heure” quotes the police. Szájer was caught on the run. He was still trying to escape from the apartment on the first floor via the rain gutter. He injured his hand in the process. The police kept drugs in his backpack.

“They brought more and more people with them”

Szájer was unable to identify himself, said he had wanted to visit party friends, but referred to his immunity as a MEP. But the police would not let him get away with it, established his personal details and initiated an investigation into drug possession. The MP says that he does not own the drug. Cocaine was also said to have been found in the apartment.

A Ukrainian who rented the apartment on the first floor told De Morgen newspaper that he organizes orgies for men there every few weeks. It started with some friends from the Netherlands and Germany. “And they brought more and more people with them.” More than 50 participants were the rule. The MEP has now apologized for the violation of the Corona rules: “That was irresponsible of me, I will take the sanctions on myself.”

The reaction of the Hungarian opposition was not long in coming: The Szájer case exposed the double standards of the right-wing conservative Fidesz party, it was said. A declaration by the liberal pro-European momentum movement speaks of a “complete moral bankruptcy of Fidesz”. Szájer is one of the founders of the Orban party, married to a constitutional judge. The couple have a daughter. The MP, who has been in the European Parliament since 2004, likes to defend the bourgeois family.

Bourgeois facade

In Hungary he is one of the authors of the 2011 constitution. Among other things, it says that marriage is only possible between people of different sexes. Journalists from Hungary point out, however, that rumors had been circulating for a long time that Szájer’s marriage was just a bourgeois facade. Years ago it was rumored in Budapest that the domestically powerful Szájer had been “praised” to Brussels before affairs could be publicized.

The Orbán-loyal media is waging a fierce propaganda campaign against homosexuals, which reinforces existing prejudices in society. It is therefore possible that the Szájer scandal will still have considerable consequences despite his withdrawal from Hungary.

The case is also spicy because same-sex rights play a role in the conflict between Hungary, Poland and the rest of the European Union. The governments in Poland and Hungary are resisting proposals from Brussels to curb discrimination against homosexuals.

Poland and Hungary are blocking an EU financial package with a volume of 1,800 billion euros. 750 billion euros of this are planned to restart the economy after the corona pandemic. With their blockade, the two countries want to prevent the rule of law mechanism from being activated. It provides that EU countries that do not adhere to the democratic rules and basic values ​​of the EU can be denied access to EU budget funds.

Rule of law proceedings by the EU Commission are already ongoing against Poland and Hungary. Poland is accused of affecting the independence of the courts. Hungary’s Prime Minister Orbán is accused of having given relatives lucrative contracts to stir up mood against homosexuals and minorities like Jews and Roma. Donald Tusk, head of the Christian Democratic party family EPP, advocates excluding Orban and Szájer’s Fidesz party from the EPP. So far, however, he has not found a majority among the MPs.
