The corona pandemic shows how important digital skills are in everyday life, but above all in work and in the transformation of an entire industry. In addition, working from home has now become the norm in Austria, almost from one day to the next. “The crisis beamed us into the future and this digital transformation is there to last,” said Economics Minister Margarete Schramböck (ÖVP) at a virtual press conference. The Federal Ministry for Digitization and Business Location (BMDW) and the fit4internet association presented the tools “proCHECK” and “proQUIZ”. These instruments for recording job-related digital skills were developed by the association for increasing digital skills, fit4internet, initiated by the BMDW.

In order to optimally use the opportunities of digitization for Austria, its population and the economy, digital skills are necessary in everyday life and at work. For example, they relate to the use of work equipment, communication with colleagues or customers, the use of information and data, but also the creation of new digital content and much more. “As with ‘classic common sense’, you also need experience to develop ‘digital common sense’. The ‘digital common sense’ includes those digital skills that you need every day in your job and that are available to us for a safe, self-determined and competent handling in the digital world, ”says Schramböck. This is the basic requirement to achieve the goal of increasing digital skills in Austria.

Specialists urgently wanted

Manfred Immitzer, CEO of Porsche Informatik and fit4internet member, explained how urgent the need for trained staff is: “80 percent of the vacancies in digital jobs cannot be filled. It is not only important to use digital programs, but also to actively help shape a company’s digital capabilities. Porsche Holding Salzburg started early on to digitally accelerate its entire business and thus the interaction with its customers. This makes the digital upgrading of employees a key factor for resilience and competitiveness. We are meeting these new challenges with numerous initiatives such as innovative apprenticeships, digitally oriented job profiles, cooperation with technical colleges and universities through to an exclusive MBA for our managers. ”
